Buzzworthy Band Of The Week: Calling All Captains

Calling All CaptainsIn less than two months, the Vans Warped Tour will embark on yet another journey around the United States! I know, I can’t believe it’s that time of year again either! While we all are excited to see bands such as Pierce The Veil, PVRIS, and Silverstein, there are a ton of bands fighting for their place on the biggest music festival to tour the U.S. And these bands can be found at none other than the Battle of the Bands powered by Ernie Ball!

Each week we will highlight one band in this ultimate battle that is worthy of your attention. This week, we’re kicking things off with a pop punk foursome from St. Albert, Alberta, Canada called Calling All Captains! Check out our exclusive interview with the guys after the jump, along with all the information you need to vote for them to play Warped Tour ’15!

Infectious Magazine: What would it mean to you to perform at Warped Tour 2015?

Calling All Captains: We’ve been to Warped Tour so many times as fans and have seen lots of our favourite bands there over the years, so to be on the other side of it and be up on that stage looking out would be a dream. It would mean the world to us! Cliche answer, but for real. The f*kn world.

IM: What is one thing you do that no other band does that makes you a unique choice for Warped?

CAC: We’re a Canadian pop punk band and our drummer uses a popstar mic, so that’s pretty unique. It’s Britney, bitch! Haha other than that we like to work in some crowd interaction during our songs and we’re also known for telling really bad jokes.

IM: Looking back on any Warped Tours you’ve attended the past, what’s a memory that stands out?

CAC: Last year was a pretty eventful year for us. We’ll give you the highlights: We made the 22-hour trip from Edmonton to Portland, passed a truck engulfed in flames at 4 a.m., Mike lost his wallet in the pit with all his money and ID, Brad got hit on and almost robbed by the same guy in a 7/11 in the ghetto, a couple of our favourite bands wore our wristbands for their sets, Mike found his wallet – minus the money. It was a crazy trip, but aside from all that we met Dan from Real Friends just walking around and stopped to talk with him for a bit. He was a really down to earth, genuinely nice dude. So that was pretty cool!

IM: If you could do a headlining tour with two of the other bands you are competing against right now, which bands would you tour with?

CAC: There’s so many great bands in the competition, but we’d have to say our friends in Floorboards, and Waterparks or Amasic would be cool!

IM: Do you find it a different experience when playing an indoor venue to an outdoor? How do you think playing the festival will be different?

CAC: WELL in Canada the difference between indoor and outdoor is like life and death, we don’t play outdoors often here. The polar bears are hungry. Kidding! But no, playing outside would be awesome, those are always our favourite shows. The Warped stages are a decent size and the crowds are always stoked to be there, so playing the festival would be an amazing experience. Even if the weather was crappy and it rained we’d still have fun and enjoy ourselves, I mean it’s Warped Tour!

IM: Warped Tour often runs Bandhappy, which allows fans to learn from their favorite musicians. Who is one musician, currently living, that you would love to take a lesson from?

CAC: Each of us has a different answer for this one, but some of the names that came up were Soupy, Mark Hoppus, Josh Woodard, Nic Pettersen, Keith Richards. But let’s be honest, there’s no way we’d learn anything while fangirling that hard haha.

IM: Kevin Lyman presents an awesome online resource called The Entertainment Institute that hosts workshops during Warped Tour, along with other music festivals. What kind of class do you think you could teach, if given the opportunity?

CAC: Pop Punk 101 / How to give brojobs. Or maybe a seminar on how to survive solely on chili cheese fries, that is an art we have perfected.

IM: Warped Tour is known for constantly changing, and adapting. What genres/trends do you think will infiltrate the next few Warped Tours?

CAC: We hope there will be a punk revival coming up sometime soon, it’d be awesome to see NOFX and some other legendary punk bands, but more likely would be the rise of stuff like EDM, hip-hop, and nu metal.

IM: At Infectious Magazine we have a feature called the Growing Up Playlist. What are 2-5 artists that were important to you growing up?

CAC: Oh man there’s so many! But the top ones would be Blink-182, Green Day, Sum 41, Fall Out Boy, and Avenged Sevenfold.

IM: What else can your fans look forward to over the next few months?

CAC: We have our second EP coming out this summer, along with a music video for our single off of it. Then we have a full cross Canada tour, then Warped Tour (hopefully!), followed by a western US tour, and we are also working on a UK tour for after that! It’s shaping up to be a really exciting year for us!

IM: Do you have any final comments or important information you would like our readers to know about you?

CAC: We’d just like to thank our fans and friends for everything they’ve done for us to help us get to where we are today, the things we were able to achieve so far with their support have been amazing. And since this comes out on May 4th…. May the 4th be with you.
Thanks for reading, hope to see you all at Warped this year!
