In our latest edition of “Industry Interviews,” Ashley Bulayo had the chance to interview Aly Silverio, the Founder of Jawbreaking Clothing. They discuss how the brand got started, advice for aspiring clothing designers, the thrill of seeing One Direction wearing your shirts, and much more. Check it out below!

Infectious Magazine: Hi Aly! I’ve been a huge fan of your label so I’m really excited to be interviewing you! How are you?

Aly Silverio: Ah thank you! I’m good. Just trying to beat the heat out here.

First off, for those who don’t know of your brand, can you tell us a little bit of the background behind Jawbreaking and how you started?

Basically, I was fifteen and didn’t want to get a job. I started making polymer clay jewelry and selling them online. MySpace was hot back then so I was using that to promote it. Long story short, three years later, I grew tired of doing the jewelry and got into designing some t-shirts. Through trial and error I learned how to do everything myself. With the help of social media I was able to really grow the brand and get the word out there!

When was your first “big break” or the moment you realized that this is going somewhere?

There are a bunch of things that have made Jawbreaking what it is today, so it’s hard to choose. I’d have to say it’s when One Direction started wearing the shirts. I mean, the biggest boy band in the world right now wearing my shirts? Like, pinch me.

It’s always a hit or miss in the fashion world—was there ever a moment where you thought to yourself you were going to give up?

Not 100%. I always have moments when I think I’m not doing something right or good enough. But I know that I’ve accomplished so much and I obviously did something right along the way.

Your clothing line has often been associated with musicians and celebrities. How did that happen?

It literally all happens before my eyes. I honestly don’t even know how half the boys in One Direction got their hands on our shirts! But I would be lying if I didn’t say that my friend threw a tank top at Zayn one day and he happened to wear it.

How do you find inspiration for your designs so that you don’t repeat what’s already been created in the fashion industry?

So many ideas come from what’s already been done. It’s just up to us to make it different and better. So, if we see a trend that we really like, we like to make it our own and make it different than what’s already out there. I don’t make it a point to go find something that inspires me… it’s whatever comes to me. Whether it’s music I’m liking or a popular trend, that’s what I’ll try and incorporate in a collection.

What advice would you give to people who are trying to be a successful designer such as yourself?

I always say that you can’t get anywhere by doing nothing. If you want something to happen, you have to MAKE it happen.

You’re certainly not finished with what you’ve created. What’s one of your biggest goals for Jawbreaking?

Besides getting Harry Styles to wear one of our shirts? Ha. I’m kidding. Kind of. I really want to open our own stores one day! I hope that I can just continue to do what I’m doing and do it forever.

What’s in the future for Jawbreaking?

Like I said, hopefully stores, but definitely not anytime soon. We’ll keep growing and expanding our product line with newer and better things. Only time will tell!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

You can check out our summer collection online now! Thanks for the interview, Ashley!
