Today we’re chatting with Kill The Music blog/podcast owner Jordan Mohler to discuss starting a blog, running a podcast, and more. Check it out below!

Infectious Magazine: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. How are you?

Jordan Mohler: I’m excellent; just working on the site as always.

Can you tell us a little about your background?

Grew up in a household where the family was strict about the music choices. I had to find my own path, so to speak. High school is where I really got into music but didn’t act on it till 2010.

What led you to launch Kill The Music website and podcast?

I watched The Social Network and felt inspired to start a website about music. The podcast didn’t launch till the summer of 2013.

Do you have a team for Kill The Music?

We have about 7 staff members at the moment

What have you found most difficult about managing/organizing a team, and running a website/podcast?

Promoting the site, getting our name out there, booking guests for the show, maintaining the YouTube channel, monetizing the site, etc

What has been the most rewarding experience?

Interviewing people/bands you’ve always looked up to and picking their brains

What have you found are the main differences in running a podcast vs a traditional blog/website?

I use the podcast for guests that are atypical to your usual music blog interview guests. As our description says “featuring an array of topics from the pursuits of music, video games, technology, movies, and more.”

What advice do you have for bands submitting to online outlets?

I’m just gonna leave this here. Don’t do anything listed in this article and you’ll be good.

One of your avenues for the podcast is YouTube. What advice do you have for getting your brand’s videos seen?

Sharing them on Twitter/FB and hoping the band/guest will repost them and draw in more viewers.

What is one question that you don’t think is asked nearly enough that you’d like to offer insight on?

My question: why don’t more smaller sites team up with bigger sites such as mine (or in general) to share content and traffic? It would help out both sites in the long run. Each site could have their own unique voice and give bands/labels a bigger platform to present their material and expand their respective audience

What advice would you like to pass along to those looking to get into the music industry?

It’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; you’re gonna have to work at it everyday, but you wanna do that because you want it work.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding the industry?

Be nice the PR people; they’re the ones standing between you and that interview/feature with your favorite band/artist. Rey Roldan knows what I’m talking about.
