Hi everyone! My name is Daniela. I’m 17 years old and I’ve been writing for Infectious since August. It’s been a really great experience!
Since I was born, I’ve been surrounded by music. It’s always been important to my family, whether it was playing music or just listening to it. I remember there was always music playing at my grandma’s house where I spent most of my times. It was usually whatever my uncles were feeling that day, but sometimes it would be collections of music my grandparents had in their old jukebox. I think those times are what lead me to one of my biggest passions. Singing. I remember always singing along to every song I knew the words to, always staging my own music videos in our sunroom, always playing some kind of one-man American Idol, and even singing myself to sleep sometimes. That’s one part of me that I’ve never lost.
Along the way, I’ve developed another passion, which is writing. I remember always being excited to write about what happened on the playground that day. I’ve filled journals and journals with things I always wanted to say, stories I always wanted to tell, and thoughts I’ve found important enough to write down on paper. It wasn’t until I joined a high school newspaper club that I thought about fusing my two passions, and when I did, I automatically knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
My taste in music is eclectic, ranging from songs in Spanish that I would hear my grandparents sing, to what my teenage uncles listened to in the early 2000’s, to the country my mom would play in her car every time we would drive around town. There’s never been a time where I didn’t love finding new music, and I can’t remember a time where I didn’t have somewhat of a soundtrack to my life.
In this playlist, I really hope you can all get a taste of what I like, and hopefully learn a little bit more about me on the way!
1. I Hope You Dance – Lee Ann Womack
This first song is very near and dear to me. It’s a song I grew up with and it’s one of the first that I learned to sing with my mom. The lyrics in this song are some that got me through a few rough patches here and there and I love it to this day!
2. Going To California – Led Zeppelin
I remember listening to this song after coming inside from playing “adventure” in our backyard with my Uncle Bob. My aunts and uncles are practically my siblings. They’re some of the most important people in my life and this one song brings back memories with all of them.
3. Don’t Forget – Demi Lovato
In elementary school, I went through a phase of making melodramatic music videos because of this song. I would sit by my window, splash water on my face and sing different songs that fit the vibe. Looking back, it’s hilarious, but at the time, I was completely serious.
4. Last Resort – Papa Roach
This song is the background music to a blur of hairspray, blue eyeliner, teased hair, painfully tight jeans, shoelace necklaces, and sad quotes. I guess you could also call that middle school.
5. I’ve Just Seen A Face – Jim Sturgess
When I emerged from the thick cloud of hairspray and waterproof raccoon eyes, I found a very special place called Glee Club. I went to a very strict science and math oriented school for all of middle school and some of high school, and Glee was the only place I got to express myself. In this class, I really came out of my shell and even met my best friend. I sang this song to her after knowing her for about two days and the rest is history.
6. Give Me Love – Ed Sheeran
Sometimes heartbreaks happen, and when they happened for me, Ed Sheeran was always the metaphorical shoulder I could cry on. This, among many of his other songs are really important to me and helped me out of a couple messy situations.
7. Undercover Martyn – Two Door Cinema Club
There are so many songs that I can put in for this part of my life. But, since I don’t want to overload you with hundreds of songs, I chose just one. This is the first song I heard that sparked a very deep interest in more alternative or indie music. I was at a sleepover and I immediately wrote down the name and artist for this song. From there, it was a downward spiral into the music that I use for the soundtrack of my life right now, ranging from Two Door Cinema Club to Ben Howard, to The Black Keys and many, many more.
8. What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction
I’m very sure that everyone has fangirled about one thing or another in their lives. This song sparked a whole new world that is mildly embarrassing but hey, I own it.
9. Such Small Hands – La Dispute
This song, and band for that matter, has gotten me through several spots in my life. From my first real heartbreak, to conquering it and more. It has so many feelings tied to it, and La Dispute is one of my favorite bands of all time.
10. The 1975 – Robbers
This band wasn’t anywhere close to being in my set of favorites for a very long time, but after a bout of curiosity, I listened to their entire album and fell in love. Now, I consider The 1975 to be my favorite band of all time. This song is one upon many that I love with my whole heart.
Overall, this playlist was extremely hard to figure out, but this is my life in songs! There are hundreds more I could have added, and tens that I took out, but I feel like this sums me up pretty well!
