ALBUM REVIEW: Bleachers ‘Strange Desire’

I first heard of indie pop band Bleachers – created by Jack Antonoff (best known as lead guitarist of fun.) and comprised of Antonoff with his pre-fun. band Steel Train – through a lovely little app called Spotify. Thanks to an advertisement for Bleachers’ incredibly catchy hit single, “I Wanna Get Better,” the song became an instant personal favorite shortly after clicking on the ad. Go give it a listen and try to tell me the same didn’t happen for you. In fact, listen to the whole album, which is…

LIVE REVIEW: Neon Trees, Smallpools, Nightmare And The Cat Detroit, MI

The Fillmore with its elaborate décor, definitely lends itself to a theatrical show. The Pop Psychology Tour definitely lives up to this. Nightmare and the Cat, the first opening band, completely control the stage. Lead singer Django Stewart, comes out in heeled boots, eyeliner, mascara and glittery eye shadow, making me do a quick double take to make sure David Bowie hasn’t had a second coming. He moves fluidly through each song like a ballet dancer or aerial artist. Both Django and his brother, Samuel Stewart, (guitar) hail from London…

Record Store Day Festivities In Dayton, Ohio

Every year this relatively new tradition called Record Store Day (RSD) has grown in popularity around the globe.   RSD 2014, propelled by releases from industry heavies Pixies, David Bowie and REM, proved to be no different.  At least one day a year, the masses gather at independent record stores around the world to sift through racks of new, limited edition and used music.  This annual event is serving to rejuivenate a past time many had written off entirely.  Dayton, Ohio’s 2014 RSD celebration, like many major cities across the United…

Anachronistic Film Soundtracks

In the article “Bad Movies With Great Soundtracks,” I mentioned something called anachronism, specifically in regards to Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. By definition in the World English Dictionary, “anachronism” is the representation of an event, person, or thing in a historical context in which it could not have occurred or existed. While it is a term that is most often used when people incorrectly reference something from a specific time period (i.e. wrongly stating an artist’s time period in which they worked), it has also been used to label a…

Bad Movies With Great Soundtracks

Have you ever seen a movie so bad you wanted to hate it, but something was holding you back and you couldn’t dislike it entirely? I have a theory on the matter: the redeemable quality that saved those movies from your hatred was the soundtrack. We all know the effect that music can have, especially on us as individuals, and I think you might agree that it includes making not-so-good movies into relatively tolerable ones. Now brace yourself, some of the films on this list may be your favorites or…

Musicians You Didn’t Know Could Act & Vice Versa

These days in the entertainment industry, it is amongst many celebrity’s tactics to become a double or triple threat – to be an actor, singer, and, if they’re capable, a dancer – to essentially (as I would say) take over the world. Many have already managed to do so, making the crossover from either side in equal amounts, and some surprisingly successful in doing so. From many well-known hybrid entertainers to others you never would have guessed, here are a handful of musically-inclined actors and acting-inclined musicians that will give…

5 Tracks To Wander Off To

I lived in Spain for a bit, and when I first got there my laptop broke so I couldn’t add new music to my iPod; disaster! In a jail-break gone wrong I then managed to lose half of what was on there. Which resulted in me making do with very little music, for quite a lot of journeying, and I got pretty obsessive about the songs I did have access to. These are 5 of those songs, songs that survived almost constant attention, songs that Iʼll always associate with discovering…
