There’s Very Little Difference Between A Clash Song And A Johnny Cash Song; A Conversation With Cory Branan

Infectious Magazine: Alright, so let’s start things off with a trip to the wayback machine. I’ve always wondered, there’s a pretty big difference between 12 Songs and Mutt. What happened to cause that difference and where does Cory Branan go from here? Cory Branan: Hmmm. I didn’t know there was that much a difference. There’s a bit of time. Mutt was recorded two and a half years before it even came out but that’s just business and trying to get things done. I guess they are dissimilar records, but they’re…

SHOW REVIEW: Brian Marquis

I have this overwhelming fear of writing reviews. Interviewing artists? No sweat. But watching them play and then writing about it strikes a fear into this little heart of mine that rivals the sinking feeling in my stomach when I can’t see my kid on the playground. What if they’re awful? What if I can’t find a single good thing to say about them and every artist I’ve ever respected reads that one review and now no one will ever talk to me? See? It’s terrifying. The only thing that…

INTERVIEW: Brian Marquis

Situated beneath the town’s mascot Tilly, Asbury Park’s Wonderbar is a favorite venue for locals and benny’s as well (that’s a tourist for those of you not in the know). Tonight its guests are Brian Marquis and the rest of the Acoustic Basement Tour. Before the show I met up with Brian and discussed his upcoming album,…

REVIEW: Among Giants/Aspiga Split

Orlando rock outfit Among Giants recently collaborated with Aspiga, to create a split EP, with each band claiming two tracks on the release. It is an interesting collaboration, as both bands are quite different. Among Giants take the last two tracks, with the first  being “In The Jungle.” The interesting, organic guitar work draws the listener in right away. What is also striking about the track is the vocal delivery. Its pace and clarity is almost reminiscent of Johnny Cash: rather than sensitive, polished crooning, a story is told with a…

ALBUM REVIEW: David & Olivia ‘On The Sea’

Setting sail with their debut Night Owl Recorders EP, David Rosales and Olivia May, known simply as David & Olivia, come together to bring us On The Sea, a collection of sad but sweet modern day Americana love songs. Taking no chances straight away, the album begins slow and soft with Rosales’ surprisingly gritty voice declaring that every now and then he could use a friend, akin to the stylings of a “Who’s Loving You” in its classic sounding down-tempo waltz, giving you the feeling of comfort in something familiar,…
