Anberlin’s ‘Never Take Friendship Personal’ Live in NYC Is A Wave Of Nostalgia

The second I hear Stephen Christian’s voice break through the silence via the new Never Take Friendship Personal Live in NYC album, I’m instantly swept into a world of nostalgia. I’m 18 and hearing them for the first time, as “Stationary, Stationary” rings through my car speakers, carefully placed between Relient K and Jack’s Mannequin tracks. I’m 19, and listening to Cities for the first time, after a friend let me borrow their CD because this was an album I just “had to hear.” (I never did give that album back. Sorry, Nick.) I’m 20 and…

It’s pretty impressive when one of your favorite bands covers a legendary song. And does it right. To add a few extras as to why Brooklyn’s new found glory Secret Someones deserve the utmost respect for going balls to the walls, they covered Nirvana’s “Breed” at the El Rey in Los Angeles, Monday night.

LIVE REVIEW: The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, NYC

With summer vacation just around the bend, it was time for me to start completing my to-do-before-I-go-back-home list. Uncrossed on the list was “see new band live.”  I heard about The Pains of Being Pure at Heart from a friend who was in their fantastically and deliriously satiric music video, “Simple and Sure” (see below.)  When I saw they were playing a show in NYC, I had to be there. Definitely shoe-gazey, indie-pop, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart played Days of Abandon, their newest LP, as well as some older hits from their previous…
