ALBUM REVIEW: Mike Llerena & the Nerve

If The Decemberists and Green Day had a baby, they would conceive Mike Llerena & the Nerves. Hailing from Gainesville, FL., the band just dropped their first full length album on June 15th. The first song, “Last Words”, sets the tone for the album – high energy, feel good, real music that instantly gets stuck in your head. Tracks like “Crossfire” and “Mr. Favorite Son,” are the perfect recipe for a crowd of fans jumping and moshing. Halfway through, we hear a sentimental side with “Saturday Night” and “A Long Winter”. There…

Boston Calling Day 3 Highlights: Alvvays and Hecklers in the Comedy Arena

When I arrive at Boston Calling for Day 3, it’s already started drizzling. I put up my hood, zip up my jacket, and make my way from the Harvard Square T stop to the final day of Boston Calling 2018. It’s cold, it’s wet, and my body is tired from 2 days of festival-ing, but it’s the kind of tired that gives you energy and keeps you going back for more. It’s the kind of tired that tells you it’s been an unforgettable weekend. As I’m entering the gates of…

LIVE REVIEW: Innings Festival

The best part about music festivals is the wide variety of bands you get to see in one spot. Innings Festival was no exception. This was the first year for this festival in Tempe, Arizona and it could not have been more perfect. For those that have never been to Arizona in March, it is baseball fan heaven. Between the sporting events and the great weather, it is truly a destination for anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors. Day one was a great introduction to the vibe the weekend would…

LIVE REVIEW: Boston Calling, May 2014

Boston, I love you. Let me just start this piece off right by saying that. After a recent move across the country, all the way to the (not so) sunny shores of San Francisco, I’ve been missing the in-your-face, passion filled, music loving, Dunkin Donuts sipping lot of you, and I have to say that Boston Calling delivered everything I love about my city, all rolled up into one beautiful package this past weekend. Stacked with three days of insane music, this year’s lineup featured Frank Turner, Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and…

Anachronistic Film Soundtracks

In the article “Bad Movies With Great Soundtracks,” I mentioned something called anachronism, specifically in regards to Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. By definition in the World English Dictionary, “anachronism” is the representation of an event, person, or thing in a historical context in which it could not have occurred or existed. While it is a term that is most often used when people incorrectly reference something from a specific time period (i.e. wrongly stating an artist’s time period in which they worked), it has also been used to label a…
