I’ve been on a crazy ride with my creativity bandwagon (and I’m sure I’ve still got a tonne more crazy rides to go!) Being able to make ends meet from my creativity alone has always seemed to evade me. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been knocked back by a label on the reasoning that my sound isn’t “quite right for them.” I’ve tried this and that, but I always seemed to get so far and then not be able to move forward.
But why is this? The most important thing I’ve learned is that I was blocking my own success.
From what I’ve learned, true success requires you to be humble – and I spent a large portion of my life residing in emotional states that were anything but humble. Arrogance, bitterness, anger, resentment, jealousy were frequently, if not permanently on the menu. I expected everything, but, according to my perspective, received nothing – and this just made me even more angry, bitter, jealous and resentful.
These negative emotional cycles controlled me because back then I didn’t know any better. I hadn’t yet developed the awareness needed to change. Then slowly, I began to realise I had a choice. I realised I was actually the one who was in control of my mind – and not the other way around. I began to understand that the way I was choosing to behave – the thoughts I was choosing to cultivate, were destructive and were not serving me or anyone around me.
They were obstructing me from experiencing true happiness, were preventing me from receiving and experiencing the magic that is life – and were blocking me from achieving my dream of making money doing something I love.
Slowly but surely, I learned how to get out of my own way. I made a conscious choice to let the arrogance go, and I started adopting humility. I started to realise that, if I wanted my life to change, I was the one who had to change it – nobody else was going to do it for me.
The more I embraced humility, the more I was able to accept that I had to work hard in order to achieve my dream, and so I decided to put everything I had into turning my dreams into reality.
Humility also enables us to acknowledge that life always gives us exactly what we need, even if it isn’t what we necessarily want. If we are able to accept and be grateful for what we have, rather than resist or resent it, we will find that what we’ve been wishing for is contained within the experience. It will always provide us with a valuable opportunity for growth, which we can then use to help others – another extremely important factor in success. When we make ourselves available to help others, doors open for us.
When you truly believe in a dream, can imagine that you already have what you’re wishing for – and combine that with the humility needed to do the work to get you to where you want to be, you open the channel for you to receive it. Living in a state of gratitude keeps this channel open and acts as a magnet, drawing what you wish for, ever closer to you.
We have to believe in something we can’t see in order to allow it to be made manifest. We have to trust that what we are investing our energy into believing, will manifest. We have to surrender to the crazy-ass journey that takes us there – and most of all, we have to remain in a state of gratitude through it all! All that requires a tonne of humility.
No wonder most of us waste our precious time and energy chasing our tails!
Humility has taught me that, when you are truly committed, anything is possible. Because the reality is: what we’re capable of is way beyond what we think we are capable of.
