Nobody wants to be a one trick pony. On the other hand, nobody wants to be referred to as Jack of all trades, master of none.
But having a few things that you do well with your music career, such as learning to sing and play your instrument together at a higher level, learning how to mix and produce, or digging into the ins and outs of revenue sources for record releases can create a ton of opportunity. Not to mention, it makes the journey a lot more interesting.
It’s much harder to succeed if you’re solely a good musician. Being involved in production and the business of music on at least some level can really get things moving. With Lost In Los Angeles the three of us came together with a variety of skills – from the most basic band stuff, to making videos, marketing, engineering, mixing, and production. And that’s one of the things that’s so great about a band – the energy of a few creative minds is exponentially more powerful than just one.
So maybe you’re in a band and you’re reading this, thinking, “No one in my band is an expert on any of this stuff, so how can we create these kinds of opportunities?…” The answer is that there are so many new doors that have opened, giving artists more power than they’ve ever had before. On the marketing side, try getting each person in your band to dedicate themselves to one or more social media sites so you divvy up the work between Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. If you’re engaging your fans and keeping things interesting through social media, you’ve officially become a marketing expert.
Don’t have connections for licensing and promotional breaks? Try checking out sites like Reverb Nation and MusicPage that link you into press, performance, licensing and many other opportunities – and be sure to set up a good profile so you’re taken seriously. And of course, sign up for a platform like Tunecore or CD Baby and you’ll have your music on virtually every online portal worldwide, from iTunes to Spotify to Amazon. And best of all, most of these sites provide a lot of great detail on how to get your music out into the world, not to mention how to advertise and market it.
On the production side, try starting off with some basic gear, such as an M-Audio interface and Garage Band. Once you start to get the hang of it you can eventually move into more involved programs such as Logic, Pro Tools and Ableton Live.
Boom, you’re now a music mogul.
Being an independent band, all of this stuff has really made the difference in creating the visibility we have gained. Making our own records in our studio and releasing and marketing them is a result of all three of us digging into more than just playing our instruments and writing songs.
Don’t forget, of course, that the music you create is far and away the most important part of the equation. But if you truly want a great future in music, focus your collective skills in the few crucial areas of marketing, promotion, distribution and production. You’ll be happier because of it, and certainly more successful!
