If The Decemberists and Green Day had a baby, they would conceive Mike Llerena & the Nerves. Hailing from Gainesville, FL., the band just dropped their first full length album on June 15th.
The first song, “Last Words”, sets the tone for the album – high energy, feel good, real music that instantly gets stuck in your head. Tracks like “Crossfire” and “Mr. Favorite Son,” are the perfect recipe for a crowd of fans jumping and moshing.
Halfway through, we hear a sentimental side with “Saturday Night” and “A Long Winter”. There is no doubt that the group’s roots are dug deep in the South, especially when you get to the second to last track, “Down by the River”.
A lot of ground was covered over just 10 songs, but the overall theme of the album is thought out drum beats, smooth-as-butter guitar lines and beautiful melodies. It is no surprise that Llerena cites his influences as Against Me!, Bruce Springsteen, NOFX, Lagwagon, The Ramones, and Social Distortion. Keep up with them on their website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
