Rett Smith, a sultry, Bluesy-Rock guitar player from West Texas has burst into the music scene, aiming to take it by storm. His debut album was produced by 9-time Grammy winner, Joe Nicolo, who has produced albums by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Fugees. Rett took some time to chat with me and talk about his future plans, music festival dreams and being a dog parent.
Kristina Haney: What is the first memory you have of playing music?
Rett Smith: My parents got me a really shitty drum kit when I was around 10 years old so I definitely remember banging the hell out of that.
KH: Why did you choose the specific music genre you are in?
RS: I didn’t really choose the type of music I play. When I sit down and write I try to let whatever it is inside of me come out through what I’m playing. I think it’s important as an artist not to limit myself based on what other people may want to call what I do.
KH: Last year, you did an interview with Nylon magazine and stated that your ultimate inspiration is from the extremes that we all experience. Has the stay the same for you as you’ve grown in your art?
RS: My inspiration from struggle has only grown and seeking to articulate those extreme feelings through my guitar and voice is still my goal. Those feelings are so ingrained in all of us but we rarely can acknowledge them outside of pretty rough situations. Getting to write music as my outlet for these emotions seems to be the only way to get through them.
KH: What is one thing that you hope to accomplish in the year 2016?
RS: I want to record and release another album and I already have most of it mapped out in my mind. I also want to hit the road hard and reach as many people as possible.
KH: If you had a chance to host a music festival, where would it be and what bands would you want to have on it?
RS: Holy shit I can’t even imagine where to begin. I guess it would be in the middle of White Sands in New Mexico…the backdrop would be so insane. Headliners? I don’t know…Let’s say: The Stones, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Clapton. You’re probably not going to catch a lot of (zero) EDM at my fest.
KH: Who is your biggest celebrity crush right now?
RS: Wanda Jackson
KH: What is your writing process? Do you write the melody first or the lyrics?
RS: My process comes about really naturally. I’m always writing in my notebook but they don’t become songs until I get to a melody on my guitar and it then i try to let it meld all together.
KH: Tell me something that your fans would be surprised to hear?
RS: I have a 4 month old Doberman that forces me awake at 6am every morning!
KH: What’s a song you would like to cover next?
RS: I’d like to keep digging deeper into the early psych rock guys.
KH: Anything else you would like to add about yourself or your music?
RS: It’s a pleasure chatting with you and I’m looking forward to keep bringing y’all the best, honest tunes I can come up with.
